Thank You for visiting Essex Lodge. Instituted in 1779 and operating within the 9th Masonic District, Essex Lodge holds a rich history of tradition, brotherhood, charity and community service. As we enter our 237th year, our rapidly growing and active young membership ensures us an equally rich future.
WHO WE ARE: A fundamental of Freemasonry is openness to good men of any faith, race or background. We are a living example of this, which is demonstrated by the diversity of our members.
We are police officers, clergy, lawyers, doctors, craftsmen, artists and more. Essex Lodge has brought together men from all walks of life to share in a unique brotherhood and create lifelong friendships that otherwise might not be possible.
The Lodge was originally chartered as Essex Lodge #10 by The Massachusetts Grand Lodge on 03/10/1779, however. due to the fact that many of our members were men of the sea, and gone for sometimes years at a time, attendance and receipt of dues became very low. This led to non-representation at the Grand Lodge Quarterlies, and non-payment of Grand Lodge dues, and the Charter was revoked on 06/06/1788.
As members of the world's largest and oldest brotherhood, the members of Essex Lodge carry out the all important works of Fellowship, Charity, Education and Leadership. By participating in this ancient system of self-improvement we are taught invaluable lessons that, when put into practice, enrich the personal, professional and family lives of our members and their loved ones. "Taking good men and making them better" is one way which we describe our work.
